It is projected that

582 million people

will be chronically undernourished at the end of the decade, more than half of them in Africa.

The lack of improvement in food security and the uneven progress in the economic access to healthy diets cast a shadow over the possibility of achieving Zero Hunger in the world, six years away from the 2030 deadline.

How GNI Facilitates Feeding in Educational Programs

  • Daily Nutrition Supplement: GNI helps provide meals to children every day, ensuring they receive essential nutrients for growth and development.
  • Community Gardens: Supporting the establishment of community gardens to provide fresh produce and teach sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Educational Initiatives: Promoting nutritional education and healthy lifestyle choices through community programs.
  • Holistic Health Approach: Integrating health and nutrition support into educational programs to promote comprehensive child development and long-term well-being.

The Global Nutrition Initiative (GNI) partners with Headstart Kids to combat malnutrition in South Africa through their educational programs, focusing specifically on the feeding aspect. Malnutrition is a devastating issue in the region, contributing to over half of childhood deaths and severely impairing cognitive development, immune function, and overall growth. In South Africa, 27% of children under the age of five are stunted due to chronic malnutrition. Through our partnership, GNI facilitates the provision of essential nutrients to these vulnerable children, ensuring they receive the vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy development. By integrating nutrition into education programs, we address the root causes of malnutrition and support the holistic development of children, laying the foundation for a healthier, more prosperous future.

Together with Headstart Kids, GNI supports the daily distribution of meals to children. This micronutrient supplement is crucial for improving brain and body development in malnourished children. Additionally, periodic measurements of weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) are conducted to assess the impact of the program. The initiative also includes bi-annual deworming by qualified personnel, addressing health issues like anaemia and impaired development caused by worm infections. Furthermore, annual eye tests are conducted to detect and address vision problems linked to poor nutrition. This comprehensive approach ensures that children not only receive the nutrients they need but also benefit from regular health assessments, promoting their overall well-being and ability to succeed in their educational pursuits.
